Centennial Wrestling is better than ever. In the past CHS has always had at least one good wrestler on the team but this year there are enough good wrestlers to finally have a great team. “We have a lot of upper classmen and a full line up” remarked Coach Mears when asked about his new team, “and we also have lots of experience with good practice partners.”
The wrestling team has already started the season with the best record in Centennial history by beginning the season with 15 wins and only one loss. CHS wrestling is currently ranked 18th in the state. This year is also the first year that they have beaten Glenwood, Mohamet, Mt. Zion, and Central, all ranked teams, all in the same year. When asked what lead to such a good beginning Darren Wynn replied, “We got some good freshman and everyone returned from last year…We’re just a strong team.” With this year’s team having a full line they are already expecting great things for the future.
“I plan on going undefeated and winning state and I feel like my team could qualify for team state.” A bold statement made by team captain, Archie Williams, but definitely possible.
With two state ranked wrestlers and three more on the honorable mention list, Centennial definitely has high expectations for the post season. “There are a lot of kids with state expectations…four or five kids wanting to work hard for regionals and sectionals” replied Coach Mears, “Our team’s best three wrestlers have a combined record of 60-1.” Wrestlers Darren Wynn (20-1), Austen Schott(20-0), and Archie Williams(20-0) are all expecting to win regionals, sectionals, and at the very least place at state.
After observing one of their practices it is clear that this could be a great year for Centennial wrestling. Their practice was filled with talent, focus, and most of all determination. With seven dual meets left the wrestling team is only two wins away from the all-time dual meet record and is still preparing for their post season goals. Prepare to hear a lot more about the wrestling team and their record breaking accomplishments as they continue to work hard this season.
