Recap: NFL Week 1

by Leon Phanrana

The NFL season started this past Wednesday with the Dallas Cowboys defeating the defending Super Bowl champions New York Giants 24-17. The Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo threw three touchdowns whereas the Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning only threw one touchdown.

Several days later all but four other teams played as the first Sunday of NFL football kicked off. On this day five rookies were the starting quarterbacks, which was the most ever. Some notable games in the noon session were the Washington Redskins @ the New Orleans Saints, with the number two pick of the 2012 NFL draft Robert Griffin III leading the Redskins to a 40-32 win. The Saints were coming off of a horrible offseason with the bounty scandal.

Another notable game was the Indianapolis Colts @ the Chicago Bears, with their quarterback, Jay Cutler, leading the team with his new wide receiving core to a 41-21 win throwing 2 touchdowns against Andrew Luck who was the number 1 pick of this past NFL draft, although he threw only one touchdown. One last notable game in the same session was the Buffalo Bills @ the New York Jets; the Jets won 48-28 after a horrible preseason for the team and scoring no touchdowns until Sunday. In the 3:30 PM session of games one of the biggest games was the San Francisco 49ers @ the Green Bay Packers. The 49ers won 30-22 stopping the high power offense of the Packers Centennial junior David Jin said “Alex Smith played well and the defense was very dominant.”

The final game of the day was the Sunday night game which was also a rematch of the AFC wild card match last season between the Pittsburgh Steelers @ Denver Broncos, this game also saw the debut of Peyton Manning on a new team since being with the Indianapolis Colts for over a decade.   According to Centennial coach Jay Huffman “ Manning seemed pretty good coming off his neck surgery and the game was very interesting.” The Broncos won this game 31-19 with Manning throwing two touchdowns in this win.

The final day of week one saw two games on Monday night. The first game was  the Cincinnati Bengals @ the Baltimore Ravens.  This matchup saw two great defenses facing each other, The Ravens won this game 44-13 in dominating fashion on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. The second game on the Monday night football schedule was the San Diego Chargers @ the Oakland Raiders. 0th teams were looking to start off fast in the season after both teams missed the playoffs last season, the Chargers won 22-14.

Another  notable thing that happened on week 1 was the replacement referees still being used due to the regular referees on strike. A controversial call from the replacement referees happened during a the game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Arizona Cardinals.With19 seconds left in the game the Seahawks only need a touchdown to win on one play.Aplayer for the Seahawks was injured and according to the NFL rules when a player is injured in under two minutes of the fourth quarter then team must use a timeout or the clock will still keep going. The Hawks had no timeouts, but the referees kept the clock stopped. The Seahawks were awarded a fourth time out, in the end though the Cardinals  still won the game 20-16.
