Student of the Week: Michael Finke

by Allie Shannon

Michael Finke is the next big thing in D1 basketball. He represents Centennial proud with his hard work and focus on the court and in the classroom. He has learned how to fully commit himself to school and athletics and shine in both, which is why he was chosen as student of the week. He is on the school’s varsity basketball team and also participates in club basketball for the  Peoria Irish during the spring and summer. When he’s not on the court or at school, you are most likely to find him at First Christian Church. There he is involved in small groups, and also finds time in his busy schedule to intern. He makes time for the things important to him and knows what it takes to make it big. With his dedication and the help of his supportive family, Michael will be one of the biggest stars Centennial has ever had.

The Centinal: How long do you think you spend on basketball per week? How do you stay dedicated?

Michael: I have practice everyday after school and I try to fit in a basketball workout with my dad two to three times a week on top of that. Plus, I lift two to three times a week. My goal is to play basketball at a D1 level after high school. In order to do that, I have to work at it. My hard work is paying off but I can’t stop now.

The Centinal: How do you balance basketball and school?

Michael: There is always a time for school. I have to stay focused on my academics and get as much help as I can to succeed. I do my homework and try my best in class.

The Centinal: What is your favorite class? Why?

Michael: I would say spanish because I like Mrs. Westfield. She is a great teacher.

The Centinal: What is your hardest class? Why?

Michael: College Trigonometry. Math is always pretty tough for me.

The Centinal: Do you have any idea of what you would like to study in college?

Michael: Not right now. I’m interested in broadcasting or something like, but right now I really don’t know.

The Centinal: How far do you expect to make it this year in your basketball season?

Michael: I think the sky is the limit for us. We have the potential to be really good if we play as a team.

The Centinal: What are your top college choices?

Michael: My top four (not in any order) are Purdue, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa. I am also hearing from a bunch of other schools including Florida, Indiana, Georgetown, Boston College, Missouri, and others.

The Centinal: Do you enjoy all the media that you are getting?

Michael: It can be fun at times and interesting to hear from other people, but at times it can get pretty overwhelming.

The Centinal: By when do you hope to be committed? Do you think it will be a hard decision?

Michael: It will definitely be a hard decision but in the end I know I will make the right call. Right now I don’t have a certain time on when I have to commit. If I ever feel right about a school I will commit but at this moment it is too early in the process.
