Life of Pi Movie Release

by Hana Hong

Life of Pi, a fantasy adventure novel written by Yann Martel published in 2001, has become a groundbreaking movie event and exploded to life on the big screen on November 21, 2012. Directed by Ang Lee and written by David Magee, this film features Suraj Sharma and Irrfan Khan as Pi Patel, an Indian boy from Pondicherry who pursuits issues of spirituality and practicality from an early age. His loyalties and morals are put to the ultimate test when he finds himself having to survive a shipwreck while stranded on a boat in the Pacific Ocean with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.  This cinematic development has been shot in 3D to be even more visually engaging.  According to director Ang Lee, the movie has proved to be the most challenging movie of his life- “Undoubtedly this was the most difficult film of my career. It took me three and a half years and 3,000 crew members to complete the project. It was a herculean task to make an engaging story, which is only about a young boy on a lifeboat with few animals.”  This mind provoking story was first introduced as the opening film in the ongoing 43rd International Film Festival of India held in Goa, producing very high reviews and outstanding critiques. Take the plunge and watch this stimulating, inspiring, and gently uplifting tale of a boy, a boat and a tiger blossom into an action packed adventure for the whole family.
