Super Bowl XLVII Recap
On Sunday February 3rd, 2013, the final game of the NFL season was played: the Super Bowl XLVII. The game was held at the Mercedes -Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The game was between the AFC Champions, the Baltimore Ravens against the NFC champions, the San Francisco 49ers. The Ravens are looking for their second Super Bowl title and the ‘Niners are looking for their sixth Super Bowl title. This game also marks the first time that two head coaches, who are also brothers, face off against each other.
The first score occurred with 10:36 in the first quarter with a 13 yard touchdown pass to Anquan Boldin from Joe Flacco giving the Ravens the lead 7-0. Then, with 3:58 left in the first quarter, the ‘Niners kicked a 36 yard field goal making the score 7-3, but still in the Ravens’ favor. In the second quarter with 7:10 left, the Ravens scored again with a 1 yard touchdown pass to Dennis Pitta from Joe Flacco making the score 14-3, Ravens. The Ravens scored again with 1:45 left in the second quarter with a huge 56 yard touchdown pass to Jacoby Jones from Joe Flacco, making the score 21-3 Ravens. The ‘Niners kicked a 27 yard field goal to end the half making it 21-6, still in the Ravens favor.
After a great halftime show by Beyoncé, the second half started off with a bang by the Ravens when kick returner Jacoby Jones returned a 108 yard kickoff return for a touchdown making the score 28-6. With 13:46 left in the third quarter, half of the stadium lights in the Superdome went out causing a delay in the game for 31 minutes. After the blackout the ‘Niners went on a 17-0 run the rest of the third quarter. Their first score was a 31 yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree from Colin Kaepernick, making the score 28-13, Ravens. Their second was a 6 yard touchdown run from Frank Gore making the score 28-20, Ravens. The final score of the third quarter was a 34 yard field goal making it 28-23 still in the Ravens favor. The Ravens finally answered back in the beginning of the fourth quarter with a 19 yard field goal making the score 31-23. With 9:57 left in the game the ‘Niners scored off a 15 yard touchdown run from Colin Kaepernick making the score 31-29. The Ravens answered with a 38 yard field goal making the score 34-29. With 1:00 left in the game, the Ravens were able to stop the ‘Niners from a scoring a touchdown and were to drain the clock down to give them their second ever Super Bowl title, the final score 34-31. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco was named Super Bowl MVP cementing his elite quarterback status. Ravens Linebacker Ray Lewis won his second Super Bowl ring in his final football game ever. This game drew 108.41 million viewers down from last years game which drew 111.3 million viewers.
