The movie Struck by Lightning starts out at the end of the story, where the main character Carson Philips (Chris Colfer) is killed by literally being struck by lightning. After that, Carson narrates what led him to his fate. He comes from a broken home; his dad left him when he was little, his grandma is sick and can’t remember him, and his mother is a mess. Still, he has a dream; he wants to be a very, very successful journalist and attend Northwestern University. His background doesn’t lead him to be a sad kid who gives up on life; it makes him tough and sometimes mean to others. He is the editor of his school’s newspaper and the president of the Writing Club. Nobody seems to like him except his only friend Malerie Baggs (Rebel Wilson). His college counselor calls Northwestern at his request, and she suggests he start a literary magazine. He focuses on that more than anything. Even though he asked for submissions during a school assembly, the submissions box only gets trashed. Mad at life, he finds a different alternative to making his literary magazine come to life. He blackmails a lot of people in his school, actually gets submissions, and his life takes a major turn.
