Kirkland Butcher may “trick” you into thinking that he is a regular student. However, after a few minutes of lively conversation with him, he turned out to have a big magician’s hat full of surprises. Indeed he is a magician, but he wants to be known as an illusionist or performer instead. His passion revolves around performing magic tricks that leave people speechless. It is rare to find people that are passionate about doing magic tricks and excel at them. Although a majority of his time is filled with practicing magic tricks, Kirkland manages to be involved in a variety of clubs and study for his classes. He is currently learning his Spanish, Russian, and even some Latin. His unique personality, magic skills, and intelligence is why he is this week’s Student of the Week.
The Centinal: When did you start doing magic?
Kirkland: The interest came when I was 11, however when I was 12 I started getting really into it and decided this is what I want to do in my life.
The Centinal: You want to be a magician when you grow up?
Kirkland: I don’t like the term “magician” because people automatically assume someone pulling out a rabbit from a hat. I prefer being known as an illusionist and a performer.
The Centinal: Is there any person you look up to or aspire to be like in terms of magic?
Kirkland: Someone who got me to wanting to do this was Chris Angel. There are also other underground artists in that field that I look up to in terms of skill.
The Centinal: For Centennial, are there any clubs you are a part of?
Kirkland: Art, GSA, Social action Committee, and Anime club.
The Centinal: Do you have any plans for college?
Kirkland: I’m going to go to a community college in Forks, Washington.
