2013-2014 Wrestling Season

The wrestling season was a very interesting this year. After losing their main key wrestlers Austen Schott and Darren Wynn, the squad still managed to have a decent overall team record. Although having some rough personal records this season, wrestlers Austin Maltbia, Darnell Flemings, Dom Harmon, and Sammie Lack all advanced to sectionals . I got a chance to sit down one on one and interview junior Austin Maltbia on how this season went. The Centinal: How’s the wrestling season going so far?

Maltbia: The season is going pretty well.  I finished the regular season at 12-13

The Centinal: How’s the relationship between the coach and wrestlers?

Maltbia: The relationship between the coach [Mears] and wrestlers are great.  Our coach is very encouraging and helpful.  All the wrestlers love the coach which makes them work harder.

The Centinal: What was the highlight of your season?

Maltbia: At regionals when I won the 3rd place to make it to sectionals

The Centinal: Anyone on the team that you feel close to? Why?

Maltbia: Yes, Corbin Folsom.  He was my wrestling partner last year and this year.  So he and I have a special connection.

The Centinal: Anyone on the team surprised you with their performance this season? How come?

Maltbia: Dom Harmon, he wrestled this year for the first time in five years and wrestled at least 8 or 9 state qualifiers.  In each of those matches he never backed down.

The Centinal: If anything you can improve on, what would it be? Why?

Maltbia: I would improve on my takedown ability.
