Captain America: The Winter Soldier Review

Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe continued with the 2nd installment of Captain Americas solo film titled Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The movie is set after the events of New York for The Avengers. Steve Rodgers aka Captain America played by Chris Evans has now gotten somewhat used to life in present times and also works for shield. S.H.I.E.L.D has now gotten a new enemy a mysterious man named the Winter Soldier played by Sebastian Stan who is just as strong as Cap. Returning characters are also Agent Maria Hill played by Cobie Smulders, Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow played by Scarlett Johansson, and Nick Fury played by Samuel L. Jackson. There also some new characters like Sam Wilson aka the Falcon he is a new friend of Steves where he eventually helps him defeat the enemy played by Anthony Mackie, Agent 13 a shield agent that is a next door neighbor to Steve if you have read the comics she is eventually the girlfriend of Steve played by Emily VanCamp, and lastly Alexander Pierce a high executive of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Cap is a man out of time being a 95 year old but in a young man’s body. One funny goof that comes from his out timeness would be he has a list of things to check out for example like Star Wars or all the Rocky movies although he does not know what it is. This element is not played with a lot though. Steve and Natasha really become closer in this movie to help each other to fight off this mysterious Winter Soldier.  If you know the comics then you know who he is but I won’t say anything. The Cap and Falcon dynamic is a new thing where they probably are as close as Steve was to Bucky back in the first film.  This film also has huge implications to the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe especially to their TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. There are also two end credits scenes so stay after.

I thought this is one of the best superhero movies I have seen. Just about as good as The Avengers. This film really explored the idea that the world is not black and white there is a grey area. Also sometimes that you have to bend the rules to keep the citizens safe. The action in this particular film is in my opinion the best in all of the Marvel Cinematic Universes Cap looks more agile same goes for Black Widow from rolling throwing the shield doing flips and the Winter Soldiers fascination with grenade launchers I thought that was interesting to give to him.   There are also a lot of Easter eggs in this film so keep your eyes and ears out there for it. One scene I very enjoyed was where Steve questions what S.H.I.E.L.D is doing and cannot say much. One thing I hoped they would show would at least some kind of expanded relationship between Steve and agent 13 hopefully they expand it a little in Avengers: Age of Ultron and a lot in the third installment of Captain America. Black Widow was one of the best characters in the movie besides Steve to see her more involved really helped show that not just men can take out the enemy. I like that Cap has the hard time in believing what is right and what is wrong in this day and age it really brings a new element to the character. Hopefully once Avengers: Age of Ultron runs around Cap would be just as good in this film. I think this was the best movie of 2014.

I give this film 9 Captain Americas Shield out of 10.
