This years’ wrestling season is special! Two years ago, the team was led by state qualifying wrestlers Darren Wynn and Austen Schott. But this time around, The team now is led by Juniors Corbin Folsum (220 weight class) and Montrez Bailey (heavyweight) along with Sophomore, Gavin Goddard (160 weight class). The rest of the team is also very talented and versatile.
Folsum is a young unique 220 pounder who made it to state last year. He keeps improving by getting stronger and wiser.
Bailey is an incoming junior who recently moved here to Champaign from Michigan. Bailey is a very strong undersized heavyweight wrestler with great strength and is also very quick. His quickness is a bonus because he wrestles a bunch of big slow wrestlers.
Last but not least is Gavin Goddard. Goddard is an upcoming wrestler who can make a name for himself. If you ever watch him wrestle, it’s certain that you will see him doing a huge body slam on his opponent getting the crowd hyped up! Goddard is very skilled and is like another Austen Schott.
This years’ team is well balanced out with a very young roster. Oddly, there isn’t any seniors on the team because of the absence of last years’ wrestlers Austin Maltbia, Jordan Terry, and Corbin Arnette (who moved away.) Maltbia is a senior who went to sectionals 2 years in a row who will be rejoining the team next semester along with other senior Terry.
So far, the wrestling team overall record is 3-4 after starting the season off 6-2 last year. They’ve lost very close meets against very good experienced teams. “We can definitely can do better and pick it up this season,” said team captain Corbin Folsum. “We can practice harder and go to meets with a better state of mind.”
Hopefully over this winter break, the team can pull it together and be a powerhouse again. With the return of experienced wrestlers Maltbia and Terry, these guys can show the young wrestlers the right path with great leadership and hard work.
Be on the look out to see several Centennial wrestlers competing or even winning State this season! Best of luck to Coach Mears and Coach Schott coaching this young talented team.
