Charger (Local) Spotlight: Baseball

by Zack Miller

A few weeks into the baseball season and Centennial (Freshman) baseball is off to a prodigious start. The 16-4 freshman baseball team opened the season strongly getting off to a well over .500 start a month into the season.

Second baseman Justin Cardani beamed when describing “the 24-7 annihilation of Central”. The powerful-slugging squad is not shy about voicing their win over the cross town rival Maroons. “It was a great game, very exciting.” said Cardani. “Everyone got in on scoring. That makes us an exciting team”.

Baseball has slowly begun to lose its tag as ‘America’s Sport’. Football has taken over the televisions in American living rooms across the country. The Super Bowl is one of the most watched productions throughout the entire TV world. But with baseball teams like Centennial on up through the Illinois Fighting Illini to the St. Louis Cardinals, picking up offensive games and exciting crowds across the world, baseball is beginning to rise.

The Illini have now won a franchise record 25 straight games. They took the outright Big Ten title Thursday night with a 6-2 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers. A week ago, the Illini scored an astounding 28 runs against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

So with Centennial and Illinois baseball rising and becoming more and more exciting, will you show your support? The Chargers host a top-tier Mahomet team next Wednesday and a rematch against Central next Thursday. As for the Illini, you can catch them on Big Ten Network as the take on the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments.
